Most buffs that can be improved through talents show up like that--for instance, the buffs from my Windfury, Flametongue, and Strength of Earth totems show the untalented amount, while giving the full buff (which is displayed correctly in my spellbook and on my totem bar). I know there was a similar thing with Blessing of Kings when there were multiple talented ranks of it as well, where the buff tooltip displayed the minimum buff (2?) even when it was the fully talented wrote:I have received a translation of his post to the language of the...

Sword of the New World Launches This Week
2009-11-07 00:00:00
This week, K2 Network's new MMORPG Sword of the New World: Granado Espada will go live in North America and Europe, which you can grab here. Instead of using a swords and sorcery, men-in-tights type of setting, Sword of the New World takes place in a fantasy version of the Age of Exploration. It's a time when intrepid and merciless Europeans sailed over to Americas and claimed everything they saw for king an...
Warcraft Lands Writer
2009-10-15 00:00:00
The World of Warcraft movie now has a screenwriter -- and he's certainly someone who knows a bit about war. Robert Rodat, who penned Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, is the man for the job. At least, that's what director Sam Raimi -- who will be helming the Warcraft film -- says.

Raimi also spoke a bit about the film's story while talking to MTV. He says the movie will be an original tale based on the overall game rather than a specific storyline.

StarCraft 2 Bonanza: Beta Still Not Dated, But New Screenshots, Singleplayer Details
2009-09-26 00:00:00
Last Monday, I visited Blizzard HQ expecting to get a look at the new Battle.net in advance of the multiplayer beta. Unfortunately, the team is still finalizing many Battle.net features, and I left without an estimate on when the anticipated multiplayer test would begin.
"We're still working on [Battle.net], and it's kind of up in the air," StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder told me. "I kind of wish it wasn't, but it kind of is."Browder gave the typical "when it's ready" response when asked of a beta timeframe. The test is scheduled to begin sometime this summer.
However, I did get a chance to talk at length with the affable Browder, thoroughly covering the reasons for the sequel's lengthy development period. In the process, the designer shared some exciting details on the singleplayer portion of the game. What follows is a late-night preview of the full interview, to be published later today:

Shack: I played a version of StarCraft II two years ago, then last year, and now today. With the game being in a playable state for so long, obviously this has been a considerable iterative process for you guys. How has the experience been on your end?
Dustin Browder: Hard. [laughs] Yeah, it's easily the most challeng...

We are fortunate enough to have a video interview with none other than Dr. Richard Bartle, a legend in the MMOG industry. Enjoy!
Cody "Micajah" Bye was honored to sit down with one of the true visionaries of online gaming at IMGDC 2007, Dr. Richard Bartle, and we bring our time with Dr. Bartle to you in streaming video, complete with all the dry English wit and class he brought to the Indie MMO conference. Bartle, whose very accessible and fun-to-read scholarly work is required reading for anyone hoping to understand MMOs and MMO communities, speaks to the challenges and great opportunities for virtual world games developed by an indie developer with complete creative control over his or her work.
Dr. Richard Bartle Video Interview
Last week we asked the development community what could be done to lower the barrier to entry to massively multiplayer games. I posted many of the answers in, "Devs Tear Down The Wall". Chris Klug, the Creative Director of Stargate Worlds weighed in over the weekend and his insight, as usual, is right on.
"The one thing that would lower the barrier to entry would be to choose a game topic that would appeal to a broader audience than simply aiming at geeky gamers. For instance, an MMO detective game, an MMO romance soap-opera game, an MMO sports title, all would have the potential to open the space to a much broader audience. We tend in the industry to design games only for ourselves." - Chris Klug, Creative Director - Stargate Worlds
The most intriguing idea in that quote is that developers design games that they themselves would like. It's a basic premise and of course it is true; most basic premises are. The bottom line is that until some bright light who enjoys sports games also starts enjoying MMOs that we aren't likely to see a good MMO sports title delivered. Role playing games are by their very nature and design a cooperative experience. So far, sports titles have not reached the same level. Someday...dare to dream!

This past weekend my comrades in virtual ink Jeff Woleslagle and Cody Bye attended an event in Minneapolis geared toward independent game development. You can explore all of the IMGDC event coverage right here.
I've been a fan of independent developers since, well, that's all that there were. I'm old you see, at least in terms of this industry. I remember when Allakhazam was a twelve-page site updated by hand by a lawyer sitting in his Philadelphia office wanting to do something other than deal with the law.
I remember when Ultima Online launched and the cries that "nobody will pay a monthly fee" rang throughout the gaming interweb industry.
I remember when Lum the Mad and Shlonglor were writing nasty bits about games rather than developing them.
I remember when EverQuest had a 989 Studios logo on it.
Can an independent team compete in the massively multiplayer online game market today? I would like to believe that the answer to this question was in the affirmative, but at least from a "first launch" perspective I can't rationally believe that it is true.
Even tak...

CCP CEO Speaks About EVE Online, Industry
2009-09-11 00:00:00
In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson spoke candidly about future plans for EVE Online, his assessment of its achievements and limitations, and what he sees as an incomprehensible industry pattern of trying to clone World of Warcraft.
Speaking to the website during the Nordic Game Conference, Peturrson said his company was showcasing its planned graphics overhaul for its space-based MMOG, EVE Online, which boasts 170,000 subscribers and fairly impressive graphics for a five-year old engine.
"The biggest element on the horizon is the new graphics engine update," he said, adding, "We've re-written our whole 3D engine and remodelled all the content of EVE. We're very excited about that. It's a totally new game; like a Pimp My Ride version of EVE."
The CCP boss also spoke of a later-planned feature to have individual...
